Balancing the Scales of Justice

Thursday, August 27, 2020 ~ 11:00am - 2:00pm

Session I ~ Criminal Justice Reform Public Policy Update
Speaker ~ Kimberly Jackson, Esq. Executive Director,
St. Petersburg College Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions

11:00AM - 12:00PM -
Don’t miss this opportunity to understand past Criminal
Justice Reform Public Policy Initiatives at the state and national level and to
discuss the importance of legal advocacy at all levels. This timely program will
help attorneys understand Criminal Justice Reform efforts from congressional
Leaders; recognize the significant challenges and bias within our current
system; and acknowledge legal community proposed solutions to criminal
justice challenges.

Session II ~ Equity in Sentencing Analysis System Overview and Training
Speaker ~ A. Wellington Barlow, Esq., CEO, Technologies for Justice, Inc.

12:00PM -2:00PM -
Statistics demonstrate that over 98% of criminal cases are
resolved through plea bargaining. Most defense attorneys can attest to the disparate
treatment of citizens at every stage of the criminal justice system-- and negotiated plea
deals are no exception! A. Wellington Barlow created ESAS to provide attorneys the
ability to electronically search a database of over 2 million sentencing records from
the Florida Department of Corrections and quickly retrieve the Criminal Punishment
Code (CPC) sentencing data from prior cases. He will discuss the success of this
system and how it can effectively be used to achieve the best results for your clients
in reaching favorable plea deals with the state AND getting the judge to accept agreed
upon dispositions.
